Composed for Elektron Digitone and any subtractive monophonic synthesizer with a white noise source. This piece is to mutate over the next several years, adding and subtracting new voices and parts or instruments, spanning the spectrum of acoustic to digital sound. This is its first iteration, 256 Steps, existing fully as a digital chamber ensemble comprised of frequency modulated sine waves and subtractive sharktooth/saw/triangle waves.

Further iterations are to incorporate acoustic instruments that, when meshed with the artificial space of the Digitone effects, help blur the lines between my patch "phasewinds" and, for example, a clarinet. Eventually it is my goal to rework this piece for an entirely acoustic ensemble, including the chorus, delay, and reverb effects, utilizing extended playing techniques and acoustic panning across the stage.

Each performance of 256 Steps is partially improvised, as I manipulate the sound and arrange the programmed patterns to suit the moment. Utilizing "conditional triggers", certain notes are only triggered a percentage of each possible rotation, effectively allowing the machine to improvise as I listen and respond to it. As such, it exists as a conversation between the composer and their medium.
